I could wish I had managed to find the time—though when precisely I wasn’t sure—to decipher the code being used to pass messages in the Etiquette Questions Answered column.

I could also wish I had managed to get the Honourable Rag, in his persona of the Hunter in Green, to tell me the code his people were using to pass messages by way of the crossword puzzle.

I could wish I hadn’t spent half the night transfixed in prayer and was consequently more than half-awake.

“Shall I read the stories?” Mr. Dart asked, reaching out for a copy. Gingersnap made a mewling sound of disappointment, then padded up to curl in the corner of Mr. Dart’s sling, his stone arm being supported by the arm of the chair at the moment. “If you don’t think you can stand the embarrassment.”

I was morbidly curious. The only good thing about this was that as Mrs. Etaris’s bookstore was the dissemination point for the New Salon in Ragnor Bella, only the Squire was likely to have read it before us.

And the Baron, I supposed.

And possibly also the Woodhills.

And—

“I don’t suppose we can burn all the copies?” Mr. Dart asked, as I gave him one copy and sat down in the other chair with one of my own.

“It’s not as bad as that, surely?”

He shrugged and flipped the paper open. “Perhaps not by the standards of a Greenwing.”
